WAstats... providing easy access to government data

 

The Washington State Data Directory prototype – WAstats – is a web-based, searchable directory of reliable data sources and data owners for frequent users of government data in Washington State.

Goal Statement

WAstats will make it easier for frequent users of government data to access and use reliable and current data.

Approach

To develop the data directory, the Washington Statewide Information Coordination Consortium (SWICC) will work with government stakeholders to build upon and support related efforts and tap into the wealth of institutional knowledge and data expertise available.

Related efforts include, but are not limited to the following: Roadmap Project; Government Management, Accountability and Performance (GMAP) program; state and local government performance audits; the Data Book; the State of the Cities report; Priorities of Government (POG); geospatial and other data clearinghouse efforts; and enterprise architecture.

Objectives

SWICC will work collaboratively with government stakeholders to:

  • Identify key sources of trusted data and data owners
  • Define data directory elements
  • Design an easy-to-use web interface for accessing the directory
  • Build, test, and implement the data directory
  • Keep the data directory live and current over time

Target Audience

Frequent users of government data which include legislative and executive branch policy staff; the budget writing staff for the Legislature; POG Results Teams; GMAP analysts; local government associations; and other policy and research organizations.
