Local Governments in Washington State consist of general purpose governments -- counties, cities and towns -- which provide a variety of general governmental services. There are 39 counties and 281 cities and towns in Washington State.

Washington State also has approximately 1,700 special purpose districts which are established to provide specific, limited services. There are approximately 80 types of special purpose districts, including 296 school districts, 76 port districts, 19 transit districts, as well as other districts such as library, park, water, and fire protection districts.
